FAQ
I AM WILLING TO COACH, BUT I DONT HAVE BASKETBALL EXPERIENCE. WOULD IT STILL BE HELPFUL FOR ME TO VOLUNTEER?
Yes! You don’t need to be a basketball expert, just a responsible adult who cares about kids and their growth. If that’s you, we’d love to have you as a coach! We’ll provide a coaches clinic and training before the season starts to help you get going.
WHEN WILL THE COACHES MEETING AND DRAFT BE HELD?
The mandatory coach meeting will be held just before player evaluations. Head coaches are required to attend. The meeting location and exact time will be announced prior to evaluations.
During the meeting, we will:
- Set the draft order
- Finalize practice schedules
- Cover key rules and gameplay details
Player evaluations will follow the meeting, and the coach’s draft will take place afterward.
HOW MANY PLAYERS CAN I FREEZE TO MY ROSTER PRIOR TO THE DRAFT?
Each coach will be allowed to freeze up to 2 players (including their child) to his or her roster prior to the draft process.
WHAT IS THE FORMAT OF THE DRAFT?
Before the draft, coaches will have the chance to evaluate all eligible players in their age division. You may have up to 2 frozen players. If you have 2, they will be drafted in the 3rd and 4th rounds based on their grade levels. If you have 1, they will be drafted in either the 3rd or 4th round, depending on their grade level. The draft will continue until every player in the division has been placed on a team.
WHAT DO THE EVALUATIONS ENTAIL AND WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO PREPARE?
Evaluations are your chance to see all draft-eligible players in action. Each player will:
- Dribble down and attempt a right-handed layup
- Dribble back and attempt a left-handed layup
- Take one free throw
Use this time to assess skill levels and plan your draft strategy.
I COACHED LAST SEASON. DO I HAVE TO REDO MY BACKGROUND CHECK AND SAFETY COURSE?
Every coach and volunteer is required to pass a background check and complete a safety course once per year.
DOES THE LEAGUE PROVIDE BASKETBALLS FOR PRACTICE?
No. Game balls are provided for games only. Players should bring their own correctly sized ball to practices.
